Sunport Expands Art Collection with New Works
“$3.2M Acquisition marks largest investment in art in Sunport history.”
ALBUQUERQUE – New, transformational art installations are coming to the Albuquerque International Sunport. As part of its Dream of Flight terminal renovation, the Sunport allocated $3.2 million—3.5% of its total renovation budget—to support this art initiative. Earlier this year, the City announced the selection of four new installations in the main terminal by local artists. The projects were approved by Albuquerque City Council tonight.
The new collection will offer travelers a glimpse into the rich artistic heritage of the Land of Enchantment, known for its vibrant cultural diversity, natural beauty, and deep-rooted artist traditions. The works will feature a variety of mediums, from sculpture to paintings and mixed media works.
“This project is not only about beautifying the Sunport, but about creating a space where travelers can experience the essence of Albuquerque before they even step outside,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “The Sunport is the gateway to our city, and art helps showcase Albuquerque’s spirit, welcoming visitors from all over the world with a taste of what makes our city so unique.”
In comparison, most public works projects allocate about 1% of their capital project budget to public art. The acquisition includes five additional installations, which were introduced at the Sunport in December 2023, and it stands as the largest investment in art in the Sunport’s history.
“This project reflects the growing recognition of arts and culture as key drivers of economic development and community pride,” said Aviation Director Richard McCurley. “The Sunport is one of New Mexico’s landmarks, and this initiative is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the City’s support of the arts and to highlight our local talent.”
