“Travelers and critics praise ABQ’s authentic vibe, efficient layout and vision for the future”

ALBUQUERQUE – The Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) has earned the #7 spot on The Washington Post’s newly released list of the 50 Best Airports in the United States. The prestigious ranking was determined through a combination of over 2,300 reader nominations, Yelp review data, and extensive logistics analysis, including ease of access, terminal navigation, on-time performance, and distinctive cultural ambiance.

ABQ stood out for its seamless blend of Southwestern character and functional design. Highlights include the iconic adobe-style terminal, native artwork, piñon-flavored coffee, as well as over 900 aircraft models in the Sunport’s Cavalcade of Wings exhibit. Travelers highlighted the Sunport’s memorable atmosphere, with one enthusiastic reader calling it “totally New Mexico,” capturing the emotional resonance travelers consistently find when visiting the Sunport.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized as the seventh highest-ranked airport in the nation,” said Aviation Director Richard McCurley. “This ranking is a clear sign that our efforts to honor New Mexico’s culture, enhance the passenger experience, and modernize our facilities are resonating with travelers. It’s also a testament to the dedication of our Sunport team and the strong support from Mayor Keller, our partners, and the community. Together, we’re updating and maintaining this warm, welcoming space that is distinctly New Mexican.”

The Sunport is nearing completion of its $90 million terminal renovation, “Dream of Flight: Sunport Reimagined”, which includes upgrading infrastructure, expanding security areas, and introducing new dining and retail options as well as adding new works to its permanent Sunport Arts Collection. The project aims to preserve the airport’s iconic Pueblo Revival design while enhancing efficiency and traveler comfort.

“The Sunport gives visitors and locals a welcoming first and last impression of our city, and this recognition cements our status as one of the best airports in America,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Our once-in-a-generation renovation is upgrading the Sunport to showcase New Mexico’s distinctive culture, food, and art, while preserving what’s always been unique about our airport — like our brick floors and southwestern chairs. By modernizing our terminal and operations, we’re ensuring Albuquerque is a top travel destination and that flying in and out of the Sunport is seamless and enjoyable.”
