Honorees recognized for excellence, innovation, and lasting impact in Land of Enchantment

ALBUQUERQUE — Mayor Tim Keller today launched the inaugural Breakthrough New Mexicans Tribute, recognizing people who have made exceptional contributions to the state through leadership, service, and innovation. The initiative celebrates New Mexicans who have not only excelled in their fields, but have created a positive, lasting impact.

The first three Breakthrough New Mexicans were honored today at the Sunport, where a new permanent installation in the airport’s Great Hall now heralds their achievements. These honorees embody the spirit and purpose of the tribute: leadership grounded in purpose, service rooted in community, and legacies that uplift and inspire. They are:

James B. Lewis, former New Mexico state treasurer and respected public servant whose nearly 50-year career spanned local, state, and federal government. Lewis broke racial and institutional barriers, and exemplified integrity, excellence, and commitment to public good.

Soledad Chávez de Chacón, a trailblazer and former New Mexico secretary of state who became the first Hispanic woman in the U.S. elected to statewide office in 1922 and later served as acting governor, making national history and opening doors for women and Hispanic leaders nationwide.

Dr. Lenton Malry, a lifelong educator and community advocate who became New Mexico’s first Black legislator in 1969. His decades of service transformed public education and advanced civil rights throughout the state.

Honoring Chávez de Chacón during Hispanic Heritage Month adds a powerful dimension to her recognition. Her story represents the rich legacy of Hispanic leadership in New Mexico and beyond. Her trailblazing journey continues to inspire new generations of leaders across the state, especially Latinas pursuing public service.

“New Mexico is full of people who do the extraordinary — often without recognition,” said Mayor Keller. “The Breakthrough New Mexicans Tribute is about honoring those who blaze new paths, uplift their communities, and push our state forward. These are the changemakers whose stories deserve to be told.”

The Breakthrough New Mexicans Tribute was created to spotlight those whose achievements have had a transformative impact on New Mexico’s social, economic, cultural, and wellness landscape. It affirms that everyday people can — and do — make a profound difference in our state. By recognizing these leaders, the initiative aims not only to celebrate individual excellence, but to promote a culture of innovation, inclusion, and service that defines New Mexico’s identity and future.

The tribute will continue on a recurring basis, with future honorees selected based on impact, innovation, integrity, and service. For more information on the tribute and honorees, visit Breakthrough New Mexicans. To view photos of the event, click here.
