From Albuquerque to the World: Sunport Celebrates Ascend ABQ Grand Opening

Sep 23, 2025

New program lifts local entrepreneurs to new heights, showcasing Albuquerque’s creativity, culture, and small-business spirit to travelers from around the globe

ALBUQUERQUE — The Albuquerque International Sunport today celebrated the grand opening of the Ascend ABQ Retail Kiosk Program, a first-of-its-kind initiative that empowers local entrepreneurs by providing retail space, mentorship, and hands-on business experience in one of New Mexico’s most high-profile environments.

“We developed the Ascend ABQ program to highlight the world-class brands and products made locally by New Mexican entrepreneurs,” said Mayor Keller. “We now have the country’s largest small-business presence in a U.S. airport.”

City Councilor Nichole Rogers joined Aviation leadership and other community leaders in the Sunport’s Great Hall to mark the milestone with a ribbon cutting recognition of the inaugural class of Ascend ABQ entrepreneurs.

“Albuquerque is packed with passionate, creative entrepreneurs, and programs like Ascend ABQ help turn their ideas into reality,” said Aviation Deputy Director Gary Gilliard. “By opening up space at the Sunport, we’re not just giving local businesses a spotlight—we’re highlighting how they make our city unique while helping them grow.”

The celebration included a ribbon cutting in front of one of the one of the Ascend ABQ entrepreneurs, Eddie Valentin Fashion, followed by individual ribbon cutting ceremonies at each of the nine kiosks. Familes, travelers, and city leaders joined in recognizing the achievements of the program’s first class of small-business owners.

“Ascend ABQ is more than a business incubator—it’s a testament to the power of investing in our community,” said Councilor Rogers. “As the program grows, more local vendors will have the opportunity to showcase their products to travelers from around the world, putting Albuquerque’s creativity and culture on full display.”
