Funding will help cover sustainability and other infrastructure costs of upcoming terminal renovation project.

ALBUQUERQUE — The Albuquerque International Sunport will receive $7 million in Federal Aviation Administration funding, which will help to cover certain portions of the upcoming terminal renovation project. The project components in which the funds will be utilized include building automation systems, more efficient lighting, mechanical and electrical systems, and enhancing the Sunport’s ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) program.

The Sunport is a classic icon and crucial gateway for the Duke City, however it is in-need of essential upgrades,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “The improvements this grant will help fund will modernize the facility, making it more enjoyable, efficient, and accessible for travelers, and advance my administration’s sustainability goals, making this one of America’s most environmentally responsible airports.”

These funds are part of nearly $1 billion being allocated to over 85 U.S. airports for infrastructure improvements, announced today by the FAA. The FAA’s release can be seen here.

“We are incredibly grateful to New Mexico’s federal delegation for their part in securing these funds and the FAA for executing on the vision of the infrastructure legislation,” said Richard McCurley, Director of Aviation for the City of Albuquerque. “This funding is a natural fit for the upcoming terminal renovation project, taking into account current needs, sustainability goals and future growth.”

These upcoming project components follow several sustainability initiatives implemented by the Sunport in recent years, in an ongoing effort to become one of the country’s most environmentally responsible airports. Most notably, these accomplishments include a new water reclamation system, installation of new photovoltaic solar systems, electric ground-handling equipment, recycling programs and plans for electric shuttle buses.
