Funding to support critical road upgrades along Sunport Boulevard

ALBUQUERQUE — The Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) has been awarded $3,656,508 in federal funding through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program to rehabilitate a key segment of Sunport Boulevard, the primary access route to New Mexico’s busiest airport. The project will significantly improve road conditions, safety, and long-term durability of the terminal approach corridor.

The project includes:

  • Milling and overlay of traffic lanes on Sunport Boulevard.
  • Removal of the existing pavement section.
  • Installation of new asphalt concrete.
  • Application of a new open graded friction course on the segment between the I-25 Interchange and Sunport Terminal Loop to replace the existing surface and improve vehicle traction and drainage.

New Mexico’s full congressional delegation, including Senators Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján and Representatives Teresa Leger Fernández, Melanie Stansbury, and Gabe Vasquez, played a key role in securing these funds.

“Sunport Boulevard is a vital corridor that sees thousands of vehicles each day, connecting travelers to flights, family, and opportunity,” said Aviation Director Richard McCurley. “This project ensures that we continue delivering a safe, smooth, and welcoming experience from the moment visitors arrive. We are thankful to the FAA and our congressional delegation for their continued support.”

The request for proposals for the construction will be issued Wednesday, July 16, with responses due August 19. Construction is slated to begin later this year with minimal disruption to traffic flow.

“This is a major win for Albuquerque,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “The Sunport is not only a gateway to our city but also a driver of economic growth and connectivity for the entire region. These upgrades to Sunport Boulevard are a smart infrastructure investment that will keep traffic moving safely and efficiently for years to come.”

The ABQ Sunport serves over 5.4 million passengers annually and supports tourism, business travel, and air cargo across the Southwest.

“When we invest in New Mexico’s airports, we invest in the people who rely on these facilities to do business in our state, create jobs, and contribute to our economy,” said Senator Heinrich.
