ABQ Installs EV Fast Chargers During Infrastructure Week
New charging stations mark beginning of broader EV expansion
ALBUQUERQUE — The ABQ Sunport hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning to celebrate the installation of its first electric vehicle (EV) stations, marking progress in the City and the Sunport’s shared commitment to sustainability and emissions reduction. The event, held during the 14th annual Infrastructure Week, highlighted ongoing investment in modern, resilient infrastructure that supports travelers, residents, and the environment. The ceremony took place at the Sunport’s cellphone waiting lot, The Holding Pattern, where two new Level 3 DC Fast Chargers are now available for public use.
“Albuquerque is working toward a more sustainable future, and expanding EV options is a key part of that,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “These new fast chargers at the Sunport make electric vehicle travel more feasible while supporting our climate and clean-energy goals.”
“These first EV chargers represent an important milestone for the Sunport as we invest in environmentally-friendly technology for our travelers and community,” said Aviation Director Manny Manriquez. “With increasing EV use in our region, the Aviation Department is committed to making it more convenient to access vehicle charging stations.”
The chargers are ChargePoint PL2000 Powerlink and Block units with 160 kW charging capacity, capable of charging an EV from 10% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes. Charging is available for 30 cents per kilowatt-hour. The project received support through Volkswagen settlement funding awarded to the Aviation Department to help expand EV charging infrastructure and reduce vehicle emissions in New Mexico.
“The New Mexico Environment Department is proud to partner with the City of Albuquerque in funding these fast-charging stations at the Sunport,” said New Mexico Environment Department Environmental Protection Division Director Michelle Miano. “With gas prices climbing due to the war with Iran and more electric vehicles on the streets, this project is a step toward both decreasing pollution and supporting affordable fueling. “
The chargers are the first to be installed at the Sunport. Over the next year, the department plans to install 18 additional chargers at locations across Sunport property as well as its general aviation airport, Double Eagle II.
“It’s wonderful to see this project finally come together after years of planning and coordination,” said Aviation Department Environmental Program Manager Alex Schroeder. “It’s just the beginning of a broader plan to expand EV infrastructure across our properties and better serve the growing number of EV users in Albuquerque.”
The Sunport has also applied for a rebate through the PNM Transportation Electrification Program to support its continued EV efforts.
