Sunport Recognized with 2026 AREA Community Leadership Award
ALBUQUERQUE — The Albuquerque International Sunport has been named the recipient of the 2026 Community Leadership Award by the Albuquerque Regional Economic Alliance (AREA), recognizing the airport’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its connections with the community and contribute to the economic and cultural vitality of the greater Albuquerque region.
“The Sunport is our front door to the world, and it should show people what we are about,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “By supporting local businesses, showcasing New Mexican artists, and connecting our city to new opportunities, the Sunport is helping Albuquerque grow without losing what makes us unique. This award is well deserved.”
Aviation Director Manny Manríquez will accept the award on behalf of the Sunport at AREA’s eighth annual 505 Awards and Dinner on November 12 at Sandia Resort & Casino.
The Community Leadership Award recognizes an organization that has made significant contributions toward advancing and strengthening the community’s economy. The Sunport’s community-focused efforts include Ascend ABQ, its small business program; partnerships with Albuquerque’s Mexican Consulate that celebrate the longstanding cultural and economic ties between New Mexico and Mexico; and its growing collection of art works that provides a platform for New Mexico artists and showcases the region’s stories and creativity.
“Route 66 has long represented the connections that bring people to and through our community, and today, the Albuquerque International Sunport carries that spirit forward,” said President and CEO of AREA Chad Matheson. “The Sunport connects Greater Albuquerque to destinations across the country and around the world while serving as an important gateway for our residents, visitors and business community. It is a privilege to recognize the Sunport with this year’s Community Leadership Award.”
These efforts reflect the Sunport’s commitment to being an active community partner supporting economic opportunity, investing in people and celebrating the character of the Land of Enchantment.
“The Dream of Flight reimagining of the Sunport experience is more than one project—it is an interconnected set of efforts designed to create a guest experience that is both world-class and deeply New Mexican,” said Aviation Director Manny Manriquez. “Through upgraded décor, amenities and concessions, forward-looking digital experiences, and the acquisition and commissioning of new artwork, exhibits and an in-depth telling of our history, we are creating a place that reflects the spirit, creativity and character of our community.
“All of this is intertwined with meaningful community engagement, and we are overjoyed that this recognition shines a light on the spirit of Dream of Flight and the many people who have helped bring it to life.”
The Sunport will be recognized alongside other 2026 AREA 505 Award honorees at the November 12 event. This year’s theme, “Route 66: The Road to the Future,” celebrates history, growth and continued economic development of the greater Albuquerque region.
