Phase III of Reimagined Public Art Program Opens at the Sunport
Open call for existing outdoor sculptures by New Mexico artists
ALBUQUERQUE – The Albuquerque International Sunport today announced phase III of its Reimagined Public Art Program, an open call inviting New Mexico artists to submit existing outdoor sculptures for purchase and installation at the Sunport’s Arrivals level.
With a total project budget of $250,000, this phase will place up to five freestanding sculptures in prominent outdoor locations, welcoming millions of travelers each year to the Land of Enchantment. Artists may submit up to two completed works that are ready for delivery and permanent installation.
“This project is about first impressions,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “The Sunport is where people arrive, reunite, and begin their New Mexico experience. By continuing to invest in local artists, we’re making sure that creativity and culture are part of that welcome.”
Mayor Keller was recently recognized by Americans for the Arts and the United States Conference of Mayors with the 2026 Public Leadership in the Arts Award.
Phase III is part of Dream of Flight, the Sunport’s once-in-a-generation terminal transformation that places art at the heart of the traveler experience. The initiative dedicated $3.2 million — 3.5% of the overall project budget — to art, far exceeding typical public-works standards. Previous phases introduced major new installations throughout the terminal, showcasing a wide range of New Mexican artistic voices and media.
“Airports are emotional spaces,” said Acting Aviation Director Manny Manriquez. “Art helps slow the pace, create moments of reflection, and ground travelers in a sense of place. This next phase allows us to intentionally and thoughtfully expand our collection with outstanding works by New Mexico artists.”
All submitted sculptures must meet ADA safety standards and be appropriate for permanent outdoor display in a high-traffic public environment. The all-inclusive budget covers artwork purchase, transportation, installation, and applicable taxes. Submissions are due March 1, 2026, and selected works are expected to be installed following selection and purchase.
“The Sunport is already known for its robust art program,” said Jonathan Small, Customer Experience Manager. “With this project, we aim to further enhance our collection with works that reflect New Mexico’s creativity, diversity, and enduring artistic legacy.”
Through Dream of Flight, the Sunport continues to position itself as both a transportation hub and a cultural destination. Application details can be found at https://www.abqsunport.com/sunport-arts-program/
