ALBUQUERQUE — The Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) has earned Level 2 accreditation through the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, marking significant progress in the airport’s ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Of the 101 accredited airports in North America, only 23 have achieved Level 2 status, placing the Sunport in a select group of industry leaders.
Level 2 accreditation recognizes airports that have not only mapped their carbon footprint but also demonstrated a measurable reduction in emissions over a three-year rolling average.
“The Sunport’s Level 2 Carbon Accreditation is a clear example of our Climate Action Plan in action,” said Mayor Keller. “By reducing gas emissions and leading in sustainable aviation practices, we’re delivering on our commitment to protect our environment while keeping Albuquerque moving forward.”
The achievement underscores the Sunport’s broader sustainability strategy and long-term operational efficiency goals.
“This accreditation is an important benchmark for our airport and our community,” said Acting Aviation Director Manny Manriquez. “It reflects years of intentional work to reduce our environmental impact while continuing to provide safe, efficient, and reliable service for travelers. We are committed to building on this progress going forward.”
Airport carbon accreditation is the only institutionally endorsed global carbon management certification program specifically designed for airports. The program independently assesses and recognizes airports for their efforts to manage and reduce carbon emissions across seven levels of certification. ACA is also the only global, airport-specific carbon standard based on internationally recognized methodologies. It provides airports worldwide with a common framework for active carbon management and measurable performance benchmarks.
“The Sunport is proud to be among this elite group, having demonstrated a measurable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over a three-year rolling average,” said Aviation Environmental Program Manager Alex Schroeder. “This milestone reflects our continued commitment to environmental stewardship and climate responsibility.”
